{"id":15384,"date":"2023-02-22T11:22:13","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T16:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countertools.org\/?p=15384"},"modified":"2023-02-22T11:25:49","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T16:25:49","slug":"alcohol-industry-profits-from-marketing-to-underage-buyers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/countertools.org\/blog\/alcohol-industry-profits-from-marketing-to-underage-buyers\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol industry profits from marketing to underage buyers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to find data on all sorts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iriworldwide.com\/IRI\/media\/Library\/IRI-BevAlc-Trends-August-2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumer trends in alcoholic beverages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from insights on how the pandemic impacted sales to what products are gaining popularity, often with breakdowns by age, gender, and other demographic information. One data point you won\u2019t see represented in these consumer reports is how much of these sales can be attributed to underage consumption. A recently published study by researchers at UNC Chapel Hill, Johns Hopkins University and Boston University is one of the few to capture how much money is made from youth alcohol consumption. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsad.com\/doi\/full\/10.15288\/jsad.2021.82.368\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found the tab for underage drinkers came to $17.5 billion, or 8.6 percent of the alcoholic drinks sold in 2016. Despite the alcoholic beverage industry&#8217;s stated commitment to reducing underage drinking, it is clear that there is a significant financial benefit of illegal sales to minors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the industry\u2019s efforts to ensure alcohol is available and marketed everywhere we look, it\u2019s no real surprise to hear of its desirability among underage drinkers. Convenience stores, grocery stores, and mass merchandisers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csnews.com\/2022-deep-dive-alcoholic-beverages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">account for a majority of retail sales for beer and malt beverages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; all places easily accessible to youth under the age of 21 &#8211; leaving plenty of opportunities for regular exposure to alcohol marketing and promotions. The impacts of the exposure to alcohol advertising on youth closely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsad.com\/doi\/full\/10.15288\/jsads.2020.s19.97\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mirror those found for tobacco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/add.13591\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initiation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or continuation of use, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352853219301403#:~:text=The%20results%20show%20that%20overall,and%20current%20underage%20drinking%20behavior.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand recognition or brand preference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, youth who are exposed to alcohol advertisements <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsad.com\/doi\/10.15288\/jsad.2018.79.399\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceive alcohol consumption to be more common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among their peers. With alcohol easily accessible, this advertising is often visible in close proximity to areas with a high concentration of youth, such as schools or parks. Similarly, a high concentration of alcohol retailers, or a high alcohol outlet density, has associations with increased alcohol consumption leading to a number of public health and safety concerns, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21205052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00036849500000066\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traffic crashes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21919975\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">property damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can we do to protect the youth in our communities? According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/prevention.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are several evidence-based strategies that has the potential to reduce underage consumption by directly targeting the retail environment:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecommunityguide.org\/findings\/alcohol-excessive-consumption-regulation-alcohol-outlet-density\"><b>Regulate alcohol outlet density<\/b><\/a><b><i>.<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Licensing and zoning restrictions can be used to limit the number or concentration of alcohol retailers in an area.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecommunityguide.org\/findings\/alcohol-excessive-consumption-increasing-alcohol-taxes\"><b>Increase alcohol taxes<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol taxes may include excise, ad valorem, or sales taxes, all of which affect the price of alcohol. Taxes can be levied at the federal, state, or local level on beer, wine or distilled spirits.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecommunityguide.org\/findings\/alcohol-excessive-consumption-enhanced-enforcement-laws-prohibiting-sales-minors\"><b>Enhanced enforcement of laws prohibiting sales to minors<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An enhanced enforcement program initiates or increases compliance checks at alcohol retailers (such as bars, restaurants, and liquor stores).<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to learn more about the alcohol retail environment in your community?
